How Toxic Become a Hit Before Release
Toxic” Movie and Its Pre-Release Success
The movie “Toxic” has already become a superhit even before its release. You might wonder how that’s possible. The film hasn’t been released yet, and not a single ticket has been sold, so how can it be a hit?
The reason is clear: producers in the South have a trend where they don’t just wait for the movie’s release to see what happens. They prepare in a way that ensures the producer doesn’t face any loss. They aren’t greedy for massive profits post-release; they focus on booking their profits early on. Once the profit is secured, they say, “This is all we need; you can earn the rest. We’ve made the product, and now the rest of the earnings are yours.”
This approach provides them with a platform where they don’t incur losses. Something similar happened with “Toxic,” just like it did with “Pushpa 2.” As you all know, “Pushpa 2” was a huge blockbuster and broke numerous records. But the biggest beneficiary of “Pushpa 2” wasn’t its makers or producers, but Anil Thadani, the distributor who handled its Hindi distribution. He earned a massive profit, primarily due to the terms set for the distribution.
In the case of “Toxic,” the Hindi rights were sold for 190 crores, with some share in the profits. Similarly, the Kannada rights were sold for 125 crores, Telugu rights for 120 crores, and overseas rights for 105 crores. Additionally, the Malayalam (Kerala) rights were sold for 45 crores.
In total, this amounts to 700 crores. So, even though the movie hasn’t been released yet, the producers have already secured 700 crores in earnings.
Now, the question is, what is the movie’s budget? Initially, there were reports of a 170 crore budget, which then went up to 200, 300, 400, 500, and finally, current reports suggest it’s around 600 crores. While I believe these numbers might be slightly exaggerated and the actual budget could be lower, even if we consider a 600 crore budget, they’ve already secured 700 crores in income, resulting in a 100 crore profit.
On top of this, there are OTT rights, satellite rights, and music rights. The producers are in a very strong position.
The main reason for this success is Yash. His popularity is immense, as seen with the A-rated promo that sparked worldwide discussions. The film is already in profit, and interestingly, Yash himself is one of the producers with a reported 50% partnership. This means that along with his acting fees, a significant portion of the profits will also go to him. Yash is definitely in a very profitable position after this film.
Anil Thadani has acquired the Hindi rights for Pushpa 2, similarly to how he did for the first film, for approximately 200 crore rupees. This previous deal led to massive profits and set numerous records in the Hindi film market. However, a potential clash with other films could impact the collections, possibly leading to a 210 crore reduction. Despite this, with a budget of 300 to 600 crore, the film is poised to be a hit or even a blockbuster depending on the final production costs. Film hype is often inflated for marketing purposes, but it’s estimated that Pushpa 2’s budget won’t exceed 300 crore. This suggests the film is already a blockbuster for the producers. The final success will also depend on regional distribution rights, with a need for significant earnings in Hindi (380 crore), Kannada (250 crore from 125 crore rights), Telugu (240 crore), and Malayalam (90 crore) to ensure profitability for distributors. Despite the competition with films like Dhurandhar 2 and Toxic, the massive potential in regions like Kannada and Hindi makes achieving these targets plausible. Anil Thadani’s strong market presence, demonstrated with KGF 2 and Pushpa 2, further bolsters expectations for a successful outcome in the upcoming film clashes.
